Pots of pleasure

Bulbs are so versatile you can grow them anywhere – even if you're gardening on a balcony. Combine different flowers and put them together to create pots of pleasure. In our garden centre in Poynings we have everything you need to pack containers with spring colour: follow our tips for a dazzling display.

1. Make sure you have everything you need to start potting

Before you start creating your own pot of pleasure, make sure that you have all the necessary supplies. This is what you are going to need:

  • a pot with drainage holes;
  • potting soil;
  • a variety of plants;
  • a fertilizer, like compost.

By choosing a pot with drainage holes you avoid root rot and fungi. Be sure you choose plants that have the same needs; similar soil and amounts of light and water. Water your container every three days so the soil will not dry out. Apply fertilizer soon after planting in order to give your plants the nutrients that they need.

2. Plant in layers to give every flower the space it needs

Choose a deep container from the range in our garden centre and fill it with bulbs. Plant in layers to make sure that the soil is covered by bulbs. Put tall daffodils at the bottom, cover them with compost and then put in tulips followed by crocuses at the top. By choosing this partition you know that every flower has space to grow while at the same time making sure that you do not have any empty spots in your container. This called method is called the lasagne method. For more information about this planting, ask our staff at the garden centre in Poynings.

3. Get the timing of your flowers right

Every flower has its own blooming time. Combine two bulbs with the same flowering time for twice the wow factor. Try for example partnering dark blue hyacinths with pillarbox red early tulip Tulipa praestans. But also make sure to mix plants that bloom at different times of the year to ensure that there is always a plant in your container that is in full bloom.

4. Mix flowers in your pot of pleasure that fit well together

Combine flowers that bring out the best in each other. Plant pretty violas at the feet of tulips for a partnership made in heaven: lilac-coloured violas with smokey purple tulips make for a stunning view. Have pots of lilies or tulips ready to drop into your borders just as they are about flower for instant garden colour. Just lift them out again once they are finished.
