Cutting edge tools

An essential step in gardening is pruning, for which you need the right cutting edge tools. Whether you're sorting out tangling climbed roses, thinning blackcurrants or removing damaged tree branches, pruning is a rewarding task. If you use the right tools, it's not necessarily a hard task either! At Rushfields Plants Centre you will find the right hand tools you need to work efficiently to keep your plants healthy! Take a look at the different kind of pruning tools at Rushfields Plant Centre in Poynings, Sussex for optimal plant care and a beautiful garden!

Why you need the right pruning tools

Ragged cuts invite infection to set in the plants, so it's very important to use the right kind of pruning tools to not damage your plants. Besides the health of the plant, it also helps you to work safer and more efficiently. For example working overhead, cutting bigger branches, or doing more fine and subtle work all require different tools. The right size and handle help to prune your plants smoothly without straining too much.  If you have any questions about which tools to use for your garden, we can help you with some advice. Don't hesitate to ask our staff any questions, we're happy to help!

Different kinds of pruning tools

Which tools you exactly need depends on the plants that you have in the garden, but the following selection is a good start:

  • Secateurs: these are used for branches up to 2 cm diameter.
  • Loppers: these are used for thicker branches up to 5 cm diameter.
  • Pruning saws: for medium-sized branches.
  • Bow saws: for large tree work.
  • Overhead pruners: when a branch is out of reach, this is the right tool to use.

The secateurs are divided between bypass secateurs for cuts like scissors and anvil secateurs for hard woody stems. Loppers are like giant secateurs, and some even have extendable handles for extra cutting power. These are great for bigger branches, just like the pruning saws. For trees and the real big work, a bow saw is recommended. Last but not least an overhead pruner is a great tool to use when you're about to cut branches which are out of reach. Some of the overhead pruners have a lopper blade and a pruning saw both combined. The tools that we recommend are all depending on the plants that you want to prune and most of all the size of the branches. If you want any personal advice on this, our staff is always there to help you.
