The RHS is on the hunt for the nation’s best school gardeners

The RHS is on the hunt for the nation’s best school gardeners for its annual competition to celebrate gardening in schools.

The charity wants to find inspirational gardeners across three categories, shining a light on green- fingered pupils, passionate school gardening teams and the teachers and parent volunteers who encourage them.

    The Nation's Best School Gardeners

The RHS Young School Gardener of the Year is awarded to the young person who most impresses the judges with their enthusiasm and talent for gardening. Last year’s winner, Fred Wilcox, was just six years old when he won the award, and attends Trafalgar Infant School in Twickenham, London. Judges described him as a ‘young David Attenborough’ for his knowledge of bugs and minibeasts and his ability to demonstrate planting and taking cuttings.

The School Gardening Team of the Year Award recognises an outstanding gardening team which has made a difference to their school environment; and the RHS School Gardening Champion of the Year celebrates dedicated teachers and school volunteers encouraging pupils to garden.

Nominations can be submitted until Friday 28 April via the RHS website, www.rhs.org.uk. The winners will receive prizes including a greenhouse, £500 of gardening vouchers, tickets to an RHS Flower Show and the chance to have a well known TV gardener visit their school.
